La formación del verbo ‘to be’ en Present Simple

El Present Simple del verbo ‘to be’ se forma de manera irregular. Por eso, este verbo tiene tres formas diferentes y se puede emplear como verbo auxiliar o también como verbo principal. Usado como verbo auxiliar, sirve para formar otros tiempos verbales, los cuales están explicados en el siguiente párrafo:

  1. Uso de ‘to be’ como verbo principal (aquí se traduce ‘to be’ directamente como ‘ser’):
    • “I’m Norwegian.” (Soy un noruego.)
    • “Both Sandy and her sister are good piano players.” (Sandy y su hermana, ambas son buenas pianistas.)
    • “This house is very expensive.” (Esta casa es muy cara.)
  2. En caso de que ‘to be’ se use como verbo auxiliar, forma el Present Progressive/Continuous o la voz pasiva (Passive Voice) junto con un verbo principal. Estas formas del verbo corresponden a las del uso como verbo principal:
    • “I am eating at the moment.” (En este momento estoy comiendo.)
      • Present Progressive
    • “They are waiting for the bus.” (Están esperando el autobús.)
      • Present Progressive
    • “All the homework is done.” (Todos los deberes están hechos.)
      • Passive Voice (voz pasiva)
  3. ¡Presta atención! Las formas del verbo ‘to be’ son las mismas como verbo auxiliar (am, is, are) y como verbo principal (también: ‘am, is, are’). Para eso compara las tablas siguientes:
